NCA Presents

Dirty Electronics and Tim Shaw - Beyond the Loudspeaker

NCA Gallery

7th - 9th March, 2024

open: Thursday - Saturday, 12 - 5pm

Performance event: Thursday 7th March, 5 - 8pm

Beyond the Loudspeaker is performance-installation by collaborative duo John Richards (Dirty Electronics) and Tim Shaw, that explores ways to produce electronic sound without the use of conventional loudspeakers. Almost all electronic music relies on the use of a loudspeaker in its performance or production. This exhibition presents alternative methods for electronic sound creation through high voltage sparks, plasma speakers and electromechanical devices to excite objects and summon sound. Sequences of charged Xenon camera flashes, Franklin bells, Jacobs Ladders and electromagnetic pumps are folded into the environment.

As a duo, Richards and Shaw have performed across Europe, completed a residency in Japan, released an album on Opal Tapes and run dozens of sound art workshops. Beyond the Loudspeaker was recently developed and presented in Hong Kong at the Sound Forms Festival at Tai Kwun Contemporary.

This exhibition will contain flashing lights so may not be safe for people with epilepsy and other light sensitivity conditions.
