This special archival event will explore how Stepney Western has engaged with several archives based in the North East and Byker, and act as an official launch for the Byker Phoenix publication that accompanies the exhibition.
The event will include a screening of the film, followed by an exhibition walk through and discussion with Harry Lawson and team members from AmberSide Collective and Ouseburn Trust that have contributed archival material to the project.
Also in attendance will be some of the young people who star in the film, alongside cast members of the CBBC series The Stables, which was shot in Byker 20 years ago, enabling the two cohorts to reflect and compare their experience of featuring in documentaries about horse riding in the region.
The Byker Phoenix publication has been made in collaboration with Lawson and Foundation Press. They have revived a much-loved community magazine from the 1970s and 1980s, by weaving contemporary reflections with historical narratives. This special edition features original Byker Phoenix articles alongside two new pieces of writing by Alex Niven and Kathryn Scanlan, which will be read out by the young people from Stepney.
